The Callaway Coastal brand, in some ways, is Temecula's "red-haired step child". Callaway Coastal, originally the expanded name of the original Callaway Vineyard and Winery, came about in the late 1980's, as founder Ely Callaway sold his operation to what would become Allied Domecq, the UK based beverage conglomerate. In the early ninties, at the peak of the winery's state-of-the-art production, many grapes were being sourced from California's central coast and central valley, to feed its 165,000 case annual production capacity. Their 750 acres of vineyards in Temecula were unable to totally produce all the fruit needed for such production, since Callaway had successfully penetrated the national wine distribution marketplace (for the full history, see the mini-page for Callaway Vineyard&Winery). So it made sense to add "Coastal" to the Callaway brand name. In 2005, Allied was absorbed into French based Penrod Richard Wines, which chose to "spin off" portions of the predeeding operations. Callaway Coastal, as a brand name, along with national marketing rights for the name, was kept by the new organization as part of their Manteca, CA operations, while the original Callaway Winery in Temecula was sold back to new local private operators. The net result was the somewhat confusing establishment of two Callaway brands….. the Callaway Coastal brand, produced from central coast grapes, vinted in Manteca, Ca, and distributed throughout America by Southern Wine&Spirits. The second being, the original Callaway Vineyard & Winery brand in Temecula, as a separate Southern California operation, limited to distribution in its own local marketplace.
With Callaway Coastal's undeniable connection to Temecula, the new Callaway Coastal bottle label's rear panel text takes a focus on their heritage, established by Ely Callaway. They even drop the "Coastal" from the main front label graphic, which in some instances may create confusion in the marketplace, as to where it is from, for those who do not know the whole story. Here is the new label text, as currently posted on their labels:
"Introduced almost 40 years ago by Ely Callaway, inventor of the "Big Bertha" golf club, Callaway wines have always been known for their quality and style. Rooted in the fresh varietal character of coastal vineyards, Callaway wines offer fresh, fruit-forward flavors, full body and a crisp, clean finish. Careful winemaking under the guidance of acclaimed Wine consultant Robert Pepi, who pioneered the "Two Heart Canopy" trellising system, ensures wines that are the perfect compliment to today's lighter yet flavorful cuisine."
ShopTemeculaWines.com is now featuring a select number of Callaway Coastal wines as available for purchase orders, since their legacy still belongs here in the Temecula Valley, where their history is well rooted.
